Have you ever walked into a brick and mortar store and been completely disgusted by the way the store looked? Whether it be toys in the middle of isles or clothing on the floors unfolded. Maybe it was one of those bargain shoe stores and you couldn’t find a matching pair because there are Nike running shoes in UGG boots’ boxes. If this bothers me like it bothers you then congratulations because no one likes to shop in filth. This goes the same for e-commerce.
Have you ever gone to a website for any particular product and almost lost your lunch looking at your screen? I sure have. Brick and mortar stores and e-commerce stores can turn shoppers off in the same ways. If you want to sell you need the look. Especially on the web. And the best part about selling online is you can run the entire operation out of your garage and look like a multi million dollar company.
Site design is a VERY important part of the game and you need a developer who has champagne taste. You need a developer who is going to be forward and upfront with you and tell you when your site needs a face lift or a total reconstruction. Please do not take offense to this either and pretend like you know what is best for your site. Let the professionals handle that. I mean you don’t hire a clown to fix a leak in the john do you? I thought not. Trust me it is better to hear it from your developer and remedy the problem rather than not making any money.
My advice is keep on top of your competitors. Always know what their site looks like and how it functions. Scout them. Make sure you always have a leg up. Add new features, redesign every two to three years, keep your content fresh. You must compete like you never have before. Don’t be the site that makes people lose their lunch at. Be the site that makes your competitor cry when they see it. Because you must remember when it comes to your website people always judge your book by its cover.
